History of Huffman Elementary
Huffman Elementary is named after Joseph T. Huffman, who was born in Spencer County, Kentucky, on April 24, 1837. In 1858, he moved to Collin County, Texas, and settled near White Rock Creek with his wife. Huffman was an active church member and a charter member of the Frankford Masonic Lodge. He was among the early farmers who settled in the area where Huffman Elementary stands today.
Joseph T. Huffman died on October 4, 1908, and was buried in Frankford. His gravesite can still be visited today.
Built in 1984, Huffman Elementary is home of the Huffman Hawks. The school is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and has also been recognized as an Exemplary School through the Texas Education Agency accountability system.
In 1993, Huffman was named one of the top 150 schools in the nation by Redbook magazine. During the 2000-01 school year, Huffman was also recognized among the region’s top 250 elementary schools in D Magazine, sponsored by the Perot Company. Huffman takes great pride in its rich history and tradition of academic excellence.
In 2017, Huffman became an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme candidate school. In 2019, Huffman officially became an IB World School and is Plano ISD’s first elementary choice school for families.
